This blog is designed to enable viewers to post their comments on various subjects related to The Torrington Company's demise as a separate corporate entity. We will try to answer the question "Why?" and hopefully provide guidance to other Companies who might find themselves in a similar situation. We will also try to be a vehicle for alumni to express their thoughts

I started at Torrington in 1963. Soon after, I had to have surgery, gall bladder removed. There were complications, infection and I had to go back into the hospital. I was out of work a long time.
Being a new employee, though salaried, the Company had no obligation to keep me on the payroll. But they did. With two small children, it was and still is very much appreciated.
Bob Cron, an Assistant Treasurer, had hired me and one day in my convalescence came to the house with this message. Don’t worry about your paycheck, just get better and come back to work.
For that I will forever be grateful to The Torrington Company and what it use to be. That bought my allegiance from then on.
I don’t want to monopolize the blog but I have another instance of “best memories” of The Torrington Company. My wife passed away in 1974 leaving me with three children to raise, ages 13, 10 and 9.
I chose not to remarry and made a try at their upbringing on my own. That meant soccer practices, ballet recitals, teacher conferences etc.
Never once was I prevented from attending to these events even during business hours. I was never made to travel out of town, never had to compromise my obligations as a parent.
Of course, I did make up the time off and made it a point to put in 40 hours even if it meant after hours and on weekends .
Yes the children missed out on not having a Mother, but today they are very successful in their professions and I attribute it to The Torrington Company and how it treated me.
Again, forever grateful and thankful am I. Great memories.

Hi Norm,
We never knew each other as I began at Torrington in 1994 coming from GM. I'd like to thank you for your effort in this website – nice job…………I do need to share with you one comment, although I'm sure you've heard it before. The Torrington company was the best place I have ever worked so far. After 23 years of working at Kodak, GM, Torrington and now Otis. Without a doubt, Torrington was the best all-around company to work for because we were successful both financially and technically.
Although I find the range of engineering work here at Otis more interesting, Torrington knew how to leverage its talent and design and manufacture a very good product.
It is sad to have lived through the drastic changes Timken brought to that company and how easily they have quite literally destroyed a very successful business.
I never heard so many customers verbalize how much they hated to see Timken take over Torrington as they dealt with both our companies prior to the take-over and would have rather Torrington take over Timken!
Thanks again,
Chris Kaswer
