State agrees to buy city property for future court

TORRINGTON - The state has agreed to buy the former Torrington Co. site, the future home of the new Litchfield County Courthouse.The owner is Canton, Ohio-based Timken Co.,and consists of the 5 1/2-acre property including a 43,000-square-foot building and hundreds of parking spots at 59 Field St. in Torrington.

The site will house the two courthouses now located in Litchfield and Bantam. Plans call for the construction of a four-story, 117,000-square-foot building to renovate the existing 43,000-square-foot office building. The two buildings might be connected by an elevated walkway that crosses over Clark Street, which divides the parcel, officials said.

The project, slated for completion in 2011, is expected to cost $40 million, state officials said.
The property has an appraised value of $1,934,500 and an assessed value of $1,354,200, according to the assessors online database. The building on the site is a steel-frame, two-story structure constructed in 1973.
